The company was established in the 19th century by Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn, two Norwegians initially engaged in the codfish trade but then involved in Port business through the House Wiese & Krohn, which both founded in 1865.
In the first half of the 20th century the company was acquired by the Portuguese family Falcão Carneiro – in fact, this is one of the few Port Houses which remain independent and family-owned.
Its activity takes place in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Ports are matured and bottled in old cellars on the Atlantic coast, and in the Douro Wine Region, about 130 kms to the east. Here is situated Quinta do Retiro Novo, the company’s wine farm with the highest official rating “A”.
The stocks of Port include many rarities and reach over 5 million litres. They are sold in the Portuguese market but mostly exported to European markets, the USA and Brazil.
