COUNTRY PORTRAIT

THE COUNTRY

Chile is the oldest winemaking country of South America, ideal conditions for high-quality wines reign here: on fertile soils in almost Mediterranean climate, prosper wines with a fine, fruity spicy touch. The differences in temperature between day and night arrange for the preservation of the acid - and by that, of the fruit – bestowing a complex elegance upon the wines.

THE WINEGROWING

The beginning of the quality winegrowing in Chile, dates back to the year 1851: then, for the first time, Cabernet, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion were planted – European top level varieties, which still today form the basis of highest quality. The vine pest never invaded the area between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. These grapevines grow up to 100 years old – another reason for the high quality, which especially shows with dark red, strong red wines.

THE FUTURE

Since the beginning of the 90ies, the sales of Chilean wines is steadily increasing on the German market. Today, Chile’s renown is due to its quality wines: the Cabernet Sauvignon with herbal spice and a touch of eucalyptus, its taste intensive Merlot as well as Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays of tropical fullness.
